Top Club

On Tuesday 28th October 2008, Leighton Buzzard canoe Club was awarded the BCU Top Club award, by Sue Hornby & Jeff Toser of the BCU (British Canoe Union). Catherine Guy received the 'surprise' award for her services to canoeing, for volunteering to help nationally at sprint regattas; organising, encouraging & enthusing the youngest of paddlers from within our sport, alongside regularly helping to coach the most novice paddlers locally.

Overview

Top Club

Leighton Buzzard Canoe Club is a family-friendly club based behind Tiddenfoot Leisure Centre in the Town of Leighton Buzzard (map).

We paddle mainly on the Grand Union canal which passes through the town.

Due to our location the majority of our paddlers concentrate on the placid water canoe and kayak disciplines of marathon and sprint racing. We have an active membership of over 90 paddlers, with many more non-paddling members besides.

In-Depth

Over the past twenty-six years the Club has gone from strength to strength with up to 150 regular paddlers. The committee based management structure of the club has allowed it to maintain the clubhouse and boatstore buildings and arrange the annual racing, teaching and development programme.

The Club, which has always been a family based organisation, primarily a Marathon and Sprint Racing Club due to the water available for paddling locally. We have been most successful in these events, often being the leading Club in the Eastern Region.

Throughout the year paddlers attend marathon races throughout the South, East and Midlands. A dedicated group of paddlers of all ages attend monthly Sprint Regattas at the National Water Sports Centre near Nottingham, throughout the summer.

The club also run social events throughout the year for paddlers and their families and have an annual weekend trip to different areas to paddle different types of water.
